Render times are longer for me compared to my 2019 MBP, and CPU usage overall is less impressive. Using third party plug ins is a bit more of a mixed bag though.
2019 i9 MBP hit around 84 tracks, 2021 M1 Pro MBP gave me 348. Using the demo song in Live 11 I duplicated tracks until audio broke up. If I use only Live plug ins, there’s a very dramatic and noticeable increase in CPU power with the new laptop. Just picked up an M1 Pro myself, and so far using it with Live has been hit or miss.
The M1 version of Live is still in beta, so it’s very early days with that still. I cannot afford to spend 2000 bucks only to realize Ableton performs worse than it did in my current setup Most of my projects end up close to 100% CPU near the end, and some of my biggest rock / orchestral songs have more than 120 tracks with Kontakt, Omnisphere. I'm even more concerned about smaller companies like Lennar Digital, Voxengo.ĮDIT: I want to emphasize that I REALLY need exceptional performance. Is there any hope for x86 VSTs running inside Apple Silicon native Ableton? I understand that the compatibility layer of AU comes from Apple, but maybe there will be a custom VST wrapper running Rosetta for each VST or something.Ībout how long is it going to take for plugins to catch up? It's been a year and giants like Native Instruments, Waves. Is it possible to run Apple Silicon native plugins inside of Rosetta 2 Ableton? Unfortunately it's not my laptop so I couldn't test any further. I compared with my current i7 4790k laptop and the M1 can only handle about a sixth of what my i7 can. On the other hand, I quickly tried Ableton in Rosetta 2 on my brother's MB Air M1, and the performance is terrible :( For instance I can't play more than 4 notes on a single serum instance with 32 voices. Hi :) Basically I am stunned by the performance of the M1 Pro, however I read that when using the new 11.1 native beta, you can load x86 AU, but not x86 VSTs, which unfortunately most of my plugins are.
